Step 1 of 3: Equipment
A basement interior with galvanized metal ductwork and pipes running beneath exposed wooden floor joists, above a concrete block wall and a pile of split firewood on a concrete floor.

Electrical service in a house this old was laid out for whatever the original builder assumed would run on it, and those assumptions do not always hold against a new water heater's draw. Half the homes in Carbon County, Montana were built in 1977 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). That spread across the housing stock means a contractor quoting an installation has to look at what the panel and the existing wiring actually carry before the unit is ever ordered. A new water heater that exceeds what the service can handle without an upgrade changes the scope and the bill.

What a Water Heater Installation Covers

Isometric cutaway illustration of a small house with a dark shingled roof, showing interior rooms with a bed, bathtub, sinks, and a cylindrical water heater connected to pipes and a tall vent stack.

The tank or tankless unit is the center of the system. A storage tank sits in a utility room, basement, or garage and holds a reserve of heated water ready for use. A tankless unit mounts on a wall and heats water only as it passes through, taking up far less floor space.

Connected to the unit are the cold supply line bringing water in, the hot outlet line carrying it to fixtures throughout the house, and the pressure relief valve mounted on the side of the tank as a safety device. A gas unit also has a flue pipe running up and out of the building to vent combustion gases.

The drawing shows a general layout of these components, and a licensed contractor determines exactly what the installation requires in your specific home.
