Step 1 of 3: Equipment
Basement interior with exposed wood joists, galvanized sheet-metal HVAC ducts along the ceiling, a concrete block wall, and a large pile of split firewood on a concrete floor scattered with wood debris.

Ductwork and electrical service put in for one era of equipment do not automatically fit what a contractor installs now. Half the homes in Rosebud County, Montana were built in 1978 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). That gap between the building and what runs in it is where a water heater installation either goes smoothly or picks up extra work: the existing lines, the service panel, the space around the unit. A contractor working in stock like this prices the infrastructure before the equipment, because the box is the smaller question.

What a Water Heater Installation Covers

Isometric cutaway illustration of a small house interior showing a large cylindrical water heater with a flue pipe through the roof, connected pipework, a bathtub, sinks, a toilet and furniture.

The tank or unit itself sits in a utility area, basement, or closet and holds the water supply that feeds the taps throughout the house. A contractor sets it on a stable surface, connects it to the cold water supply line coming in, and ties the hot water outlet line going out to the rest of the plumbing.

A pressure relief valve mounts directly on the unit and acts as a safety release if pressure builds beyond a safe point. The flue or exhaust vent runs from the top of the unit up through the wall or ceiling to carry combustion gases out of the house, and the drain line runs from the relief valve down to a floor drain or outside.

The drawing shows a general layout of these components, and a licensed contractor determines exactly what applies to your home's specific configuration.
